ENC Data Status

The ENC Status page provides real-time information about Electronic Navigational Chart data availability, update schedules, and service status across different regions and data providers.

Understanding ENC Data

What is ENC Data?

Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) are official digital charts issued by national hydrographic offices worldwide. CHRT aggregates and serves this data through a unified API.

Data Sources

CHRT integrates with multiple authoritative sources:
  • National Hydrographic Offices: Primary official sources
  • Regional Charting Authorities: Local maritime authorities
  • International Organizations: IMO and IHO standardized data
  • Commercial Providers: Licensed chart data distributors

Status Monitoring

  • All systems functioning normally
  • Data updates processing on schedule
  • No known issues affecting availability

Partial Service ⚠️

  • Some regions may have delayed updates
  • Reduced redundancy but service available
  • Minor issues under investigation

Maintenance 🔧

  • Scheduled maintenance in progress
  • Service may be temporarily limited
  • Updates will resume after maintenance

Degraded Performance ⚠️

  • Slower response times than normal
  • Some features may be limited
  • Engineering team actively working on resolution

Service Disruption ❌

  • Significant service interruption
  • Chart data may be unavailable
  • Priority resolution in progress

Regional Status

Monitor data availability by geographic region:
  • North America: US, Canada, Mexico coastal waters
  • Europe: European waters, Baltic, Mediterranean
  • Asia Pacific: Australia, Japan, Southeast Asia
  • Global Ocean: International waters and major shipping routes

Data Update Schedule

Update Frequencies

Critical Navigation Areas

  • Update Frequency: Weekly
  • Coverage: Major ports, shipping lanes, high-traffic areas
  • Sources: Multiple hydrographic offices
  • Priority: Highest - safety critical updates

Coastal Waters

  • Update Frequency: Bi-weekly
  • Coverage: National coastal waters and approaches
  • Sources: National hydrographic offices
  • Priority: High - commercial navigation

Open Ocean

  • Update Frequency: Monthly
  • Coverage: International waters, remote areas
  • Sources: International charting organizations
  • Priority: Standard - general navigation

Specialized Charts

  • Update Frequency: As available
  • Coverage: Specialized nautical information
  • Sources: Various maritime authorities
  • Priority: Variable - depends on chart type

Planned Updates

View upcoming data refreshes:
  • Next Update: Date and time of next scheduled refresh
  • Affected Regions: Geographic areas included in update
  • Expected Changes: Types of updates (safety, infrastructure, corrections)
  • Estimated Duration: How long the update process will take

Data Quality Metrics

Chart Coverage

  • Total Charts Available: Number of individual ENC cells
  • Geographic Coverage: Square kilometers of water area covered
  • Chart Scales: Range from harbor charts to ocean charts
  • Last Full Refresh: When complete dataset was last updated

Data Freshness

  • Average Age: How current the chart data is on average
  • Oldest Chart: Date of least recently updated chart
  • Update Success Rate: Percentage of successful data updates
  • Processing Time: Average time from source update to API availability

Troubleshooting Data Issues

Common Issues

Missing Chart Data

Symptoms: No chart tiles loading in specific areas Causes:
  • Regional data source temporarily unavailable
  • Update process in progress
  • Geographic area not covered by available ENCs
Resolution:
  1. Check ENC Status page for known issues
  2. Verify geographic coordinates are within covered areas
  3. Try again after scheduled update completion
  4. Contact support if issue persists

Outdated Information

Symptoms: Chart data appears old or incorrect Causes:
  • Source hydrographic office hasn’t issued updates
  • Update process delayed
  • Caching showing stale data
Resolution:
  1. Check “Last Updated” timestamp for affected region
  2. Clear any local caches
  3. Report suspected data quality issues to support

Slow Loading

Symptoms: Chart tiles load slowly or timeout Causes:
  • High demand during peak hours
  • Regional server maintenance
  • Network connectivity issues
Resolution:
  1. Check Status page for performance alerts
  2. Implement client-side caching
  3. Use appropriate timeout settings
  4. Consider load balancing across regions

Reporting Issues

When reporting ENC data issues, please include:
  • Geographic Location: Latitude/longitude or chart area
  • Issue Description: What’s wrong or missing
  • Expected Behavior: What should be displayed
  • Screenshots: Visual evidence of the issue
  • API Calls: Relevant API requests and responses

API Integration

Status API Endpoints

Check data status programmatically:
# Get overall system status
curl "https://api.chrt.co/v1/status" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

# Get regional status

Best Practices

Application Design

  • Status Checks: Verify data availability before critical operations
  • Fallback Handling: Plan for temporary data unavailability
  • User Communication: Inform users about data limitations
  • Caching Strategy: Cache chart data to reduce dependency on real-time updates

Monitoring Integration

  • Automated Alerts: Set up notifications for status changes
  • Health Checks: Include ENC status in your application monitoring
  • User Notifications: Alert users when chart data is affected
  • Graceful Degradation: Continue operating with cached or alternative data

Development Guidelines

  • Test with Status API: Verify data availability in your tests
  • Handle Edge Cases: Plan for areas with limited chart coverage
  • Update Workflows: Design processes to handle data updates
  • Quality Assurance: Validate chart data integrity in your applications

Maintenance Windows

Scheduled Maintenance

Regular maintenance occurs:
  • Weekly: Sunday 02:00-04:00 UTC for routine updates
  • Monthly: First Saturday 01:00-05:00 UTC for major releases
  • Emergency: As needed for critical security or stability fixes

Maintenance Notifications

  • Advance Notice: 72 hours for planned maintenance
  • Status Page: Real-time updates during maintenance
  • Email Alerts: Subscribers notified of schedule changes
  • API Headers: Maintenance warnings in API responses
During maintenance:
  • Read Operations: Generally continue uninterrupted
  • Updates: May be delayed until maintenance completion
  • New Features: Deployment may be temporarily suspended
  • Support: Limited technical support availability
